In 1953, Rocco Moceri immigrated from Sicily to Windsor in hopes of building an empire. Like most business-oriented people, his goal was to make his venture profitable and to leave a legacy for his family. With his wife Antonina and son John, the Moceri's started a small business in construction, house-moving and demolition business.
During their business endeavours, the Moceri family stumbled onto a problem of not being able to haul away demolition debris quick enough. So they purchased a roll-off vehicle, which they used to haul away the debris from their work sites. The company was then was able to reduce costs, which in turn reduced costs to their clients.
Realizing the incredible growth potential of industrial and commercial waste disposal, Rocco and son John decided to form Windsor Disposal Services Ltd., in 1986.
For several years the business was located on the site of the family homestead. A larger market opened up. Soon several municipalities recognized the valuable services WDS could provide, at a less expensive rate than their competitors.
WDS grew and in 1992, son Vince joined the company. Shortly after, in 1994, son Frank joined in the family business. The father and three sons combination of experience and knowledge proved to be an excellent business decision.
The company motto - "Our Business is Picking Up!" - started to ring true to many who were interested in saving money. The company's services were expanding to include pickup of industrial, commercial and residential waste.
The Moceri family knew that the company needed to expand to a new facility. After studying the area, a site was found on Deziel Drive, a vacant casting plant. The City of Windsor had condemned the debris littered site. After several painstaking months, the Moceri's designed a proposal to illustrate to City Council exactly what necessary steps were needed to turn the eyesore into an environmentally friendly way of disposing waste.
The entire Moceri family and staff pitched in, cleaning more than 48,000 square feet of building and 9 acres of land, which took four months to accomplish. They sifted through the waste and recycled most of the material. The new centrally located facility and recycling station became the only privately owned indoor landfill in Southwestern Ontario and the largest.
Today, Rocco & Antonina have proudly accomplished the endeavour to leave a legacy for their family. Son John, who originally formed the company with his dad, is Head of Operations for Demolition. Son Vince, who is a licensed waste auditor, is Head of Operations for Transportation and the Recycling Division. Son Frank, is the Chief Executive Officer for the company. In 1998, daughter Virginia joined as Marketing & Customer Relations Director. Rocco & Antonina have finally completed the circle; WDS is truly a family owned & operated business.
